The Emotion Box – also known as “Der FühlBox” – is a powerful tool for the professional magician or mentalist who wants to create unforgettable, impossible experiences. With this beautifully crafted box you let spectators feel something completely different from what is really inside.
From elegant mentalism to strong comedy routines and even corporate product demonstrations, the Emotion Box gives you a flexible and reliable way to play with your audience’s senses and perception.
The Effect
A box is shown standing openly on the table or on a small stand. The audience can look inside – it is clearly empty.
One spectator is positioned to the side of the box so they cannot see inside, only reach in from the front.
You place a bottle (or any easily described object, such as a shoe) into the open box from above, hidden from the spectator’s view. The audience can see the object, but the spectator at the side cannot.
You ask the spectator to carefully reach in and describe what they feel. They will describe the correct object – for example, “It feels like a bottle.” You then take the bottle out and show that they were absolutely right.
Now the real magic begins…
You slide the front cover in place so the spectator cannot see inside the box when they reach in. From behind, out of sight, you secretly place a different object inside.
The spectator again reaches in and describes exactly what they feel: “A small metal spoon…”
But when they pull their hand back and lift the front cover, the audience sees a large ladle inside the box! The big ladle is removed and handed out – it is completely real.
A second spectator comes on stage and stands at the side of the box. The front cover is closed again and you secretly place a new item inside. The spectator reaches in and describes a soft, flexible object – clearly a sponge.
Yet when the front cover is removed, the audience sees a solid stone! You drop the stone onto the floor – everyone hears that it is genuine.
You can repeat this with several spectators and different objects. Every time, they clearly feel one thing – but the audience sees something completely different.
Endless possibilities for professionals
- Suitable for 2–4 spectators in the same routine.
- Perfect for mentalism, parlour and stage shows.
- Can be played very close-up, as long as the back is not visible.
- Ideal for corporate and product presentations: The spectator feels one product, the audience sees another.
- Great for themes like hypnosis, suggestion, false memories or influence.
- Can be presented seriously, mysteriously – or as strong comedy magic for adults and children.
The concept can even be framed as a kind of hypnotic experience where the spectator’s perception is “manipulated”. Similar ideas have been used by well-known performers like Derren Brown in their hypnosis-style shows.
Your imagination is the only limit. If an object fits in the box, you can build a routine around it.
