If you would like to demonstrate that you can predict the course of events—or even a spectator’s seemingly random choices—then you have found the answer right here! Astor Mental is a brilliantly clever advancement of Kovari’s Perfect Match, which for many years was one of our best-selling mentalism effects.
You hand the spectator two sets of ESP cards featuring simple symbols. One set has red backs, the other blue backs. You also display a transparent plexiglass frame marked in the center with the numbers 1–5. You then ask the spectator to hand you one of the card sets, and while studying the spectator intently, you place the five cards into one side of the frame with their backs facing outward. This is your prediction—and nothing can change it.
Now it is the spectator’s turn to decide how the remaining five ESP cards should be arranged, with completely free choice! You draw one card at a time, and the spectator determines exactly where each card is placed. Up until the very last moment, they are free to change their mind.
You explain to the audience that there are a total of 120 different possible arrangements. If your prediction were to match 2 or perhaps 3 of the cards, that would already be quite impressive… But when you turn the frame around, a gasp runs through the audience, BECAUSE ALL 5 CARDS MATCH YOUR PREDICTION EXACTLY!
