A handful of postcards becomes a beautiful chain of impossible predictions, ending on a personal note: The rubber band worn by the spectator from the very beginning transforms into a star they can keep as a souvenir.
STELLAR by Derrick Chan is a beautifully constructed routine built around a set of illustrated postcards, a series of predictions – and a surprisingly personal finale.
You begin by removing the rubber band holding the postcards together and casually placing it around the spectator’s wrist. It seems like a small, practical detail, but it will become important later.
During the presentation, the spectator is invited to follow their intuition and freely choose one of the postcards.
You then reveal that the poem on the back of the Perspective postcard has already predicted their choice: Star. But that is only the beginning.
The first letters of four poems spell S-T-A-R. Then the four remaining postcards are brought together, revealing the shapes of those same four letters hidden within the illustrations.
Finally, attention returns to the rubber band the spectator has been wearing from the very beginning. You ask them to imagine it as a shooting star, close their eyes and make a wish.
When they look again, the rubber band has changed into the shape of a star.
It is a lovely ending that turns a clever sequence of predictions into something more personal – and leaves the spectator with a small souvenir to take home.
STELLAR is a complete five-minute routine with several revelations that naturally build upon one another. There are no difficult sleights, so you can concentrate on the presentation and interaction with your spectator.
