On the table stands an elegant square wooden box. You invite a strong spectator to take part in an experiment in “mind control” and, as you hand them the box, you explain how a light form of hypnosis can influence people’s thoughts and actions...
The box is placed on the floor and you put a silk handkerchief inside. In a low, hypnotic voice, you firmly suggest to the spectator that the silk now weighs a ton. They are then asked to lift the box.
But it is absolutely impossible! No matter how hard they try – or how much they sweat (and swear) – they simply cannot move it from the spot!
You open the lid, remove the silk, and immediately the box returns to its perfectly normal weight...
How can this be possible? There are no special stage floors, magnets, electricity, wires or secret arrangements involved. You can stand well away from the box while the spectator attempts to lift it, and the experiment can easily be performed surrounded by spectators on all sides.
