When R. Paul Wilson visited us during the ILLUSIONS Festival in Horsens, he spotted this lovely version of the classic Jastrow Illusion. He immediately bought one and, during his stay, managed to recommend it to several other magicians. So we quickly sold out!
Now a fresh batch has arrived in Horsens, directly from our French friends at Marchand de Trucs.
The Jastrow Illusion is a classic optical illusion made famous by psychologist Joseph Jastrow. French magician Father Alex has created a charming version using two old-fashioned wooden school rulers. They look like something real and familiar... and that makes the illusion work SO much better!
One ruler is marked in centimetres, the other in inches. The magician explains that the imperial measurement system can be rather mysterious – and he's about to prove just how true that is!
The two rulers are placed side by side, and apparently 15 cm equals 6 inches. But simply by swapping their positions, the rulers seem to change size in the most mysterious way. Suddenly, 7 inches appear to be the same length as 9 cm!
For the finale, it is revealed that the two rulers are actually exactly the same length!
A delightful and highly visual illusion that is easy to understand but surprisingly difficult for the eyes to make sense of. It creates both amazement and smiles and can be presented as a charming little standalone piece or incorporated into a larger routine about just how easily our senses can be fooled.
